COMPANY

The Team at CMC possess excellent track records in project and commercial management and the resolution of complex issues.

We are both highly attuned to commercial opportunities as well as potential contractual risk. Each Senior Consultant has gained more than 10 years of experience with a wide range of building and engineering construction projects both within New Zealand and internationally.  We are experienced with the different Forms of Contract utilised worldwide including FIDIC, NEC, PPP, PFI and New Zealand’s own Forms including NZS 3910 and NZS 3915.  This experience and knowledge has been gained from working with the Principal as Client’s Representative or as part the Contractor’s Team, which gives us the ability to fully understand the construction process from inception to delivery.

Our Senior Consultants are fully conversant with the Construction Act and other legal instruments and have considerable international experience with dispute resolution in all its forms including Adjudication, Arbitration and Litigation.  It is our strong belief that any potential dispute is best resolved at site level and formalisation by way of Adjudication, Litigation or Arbitration should be a last resort.  Our Team have a track record of troubleshooting projects and resolving issues as they arise, thus avoiding costly litigation.

THE TEAM

I came into the industry by accident at the tender age of 17 and have never looked back.  I love the challenges it poses and have built a career around the resolution of complex construction issues.  Spending my formative years with PQS Practices in the UK, and having gained membership of the RICS, I worked full time and studied to earn a bachelor of law and latterly a Post Graduate degree in Construction law and arbitration, receiving membership of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in 1998.  Since coming to New Zealand, I have become a member of AMINZ and have successfully negotiated a number of disputes.

I have spent more than 20 years advising both Clients and Contractors on best practice procurement and good commercial management procedures, as well as lecturing internationally on a number of subjects. I have built up a global reputation for successfully trouble-shooting projects and resolving disputes without the need of formal litigation and have worked on some very high profile international projects during the last 20 years.  I lecture internationally on subjects including the Construction Act, Arbitration Act, FIDIC and other forms of contract as well as commercial administration and dispute avoidance.

I met my husband Mark, a kiwi from Hawkes Bay, in the UK and we have five daughters.  Like all kiwis, Mark wanted to come home.  I am a keen horse rider, having competed all my life and have progressed to a Dressage Judge and Instructor.  I also enjoy skiing, sailing, walking and looking after our menagerie of animals.  A keen cook, I spend most weekends cooking and entertaining my friends and family on a regular basis.

Director

Leaning on my strong Project Management background I now work in areas where I can add most value. My main focus at the moment is the tactical phase of project and service delivery and the incorporation of international best practice where it applies. I work predominantly with Local Authorities, DHBs, contractors and utility companies. A large portion of my work has also involved the implementation of collaborative management IT tools.

I am a passionate advocate for building collaborative working environments, and have procured and/or advised on many NEC3 contracts in New Zealand and the UK, as well as PPP’s in the UK.

Through my experience and personal attributes, I have developed specialist skills in stakeholder management, design team management, bid management, risk management, cost control and assisting clients in development appraisals and front-end project and organisation strategy. I have a strong focus on delivering the desired business outcomes for clients by understanding their day-to-day business requirements. I have learnt that to achieve the best outcomes, projects and programmes need to be established correctly at the outset, and this is achieved by properly completing front-end tactical phase whereby “best fit” contract and pricing strategies are established.

I left school at 18, commencing work as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor for a multinational construction company. While most of my peers went on to full time university, I felt the desire just to get on with it and undertook my academic qualifications (Honours Degree in Built Environment and Honours Degree in Law) on a part time or distance learning basis.

After almost 30 years in the industry, the majority of which being on the commercial side of construction and encompassing many senior roles both at large and small companies, I now specialise in dispute avoidance, dispute management, claim review and preparation and party advocate in arbitration, adjudication and mediation proceedings.

I am passionate abut lean, efficient and profitable construction for all participants in the construction supply chain and firmly believe that proper training along with expert project and commercial management is the most effective and inexpensive method of resolving disputes....before they occur.

My combined construction background and knowledge allows me to bring a unique perspective to my client's problems and allows me to provide practical, cost effective and realistic advice.

As a chartered surveyor, a chartered builder and a chartered construction manager, my clients can also be assured of my professionalism. I am a Fellow of the RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors), a Fellow of the CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building), a Fellow of the CInstCES (Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors), a Fellow of the AFAVE (Association of Forensic and Advanced Valuation Executives) (at Master level), a Member of the (CIArb) Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a member of the society of construction law.

In addition, I have been a committee member at local level for the CInstCES, the CIOB, the RICS and the CIArb. I am a Senior Professional Mentor and APC Doctor for the RICS, a Professional Review Assessor for the CIOB, a Membership Examiner for the CInstCES and member of the Executive Committee, National Councillor and Head of Membership Assessment for Australia for AFAVE.

I was born in Wales in the UK, where I spent the majority of my life and career, before marrying an Aussie girl and emigrating to Australia with our two 'Welshtralian' boys.
